Exercise as Medicine for Cancer
Is a coordinated pathway of care among medical cancer specialists (e.g., general practitioners, oncologists, and exercise physiologists) for people with cancer.
ExMed is a charity that partially or fully funds cancer patients in the Manawatū for up to six months of evidence-based exercise rehabilitation at registered clinical exercise physiology centres.
An evidence-based practise providing individualised exercise prescriptions to people with cancer before, during and following their treatment.

Charitable Trust
Exercise as Medicine for Cancer (ExMed) is a non-profit organisation and charity in New Zealand. We are focused on providing people with cancer access to best-practice exercise medicine at the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost. ExMed is incorporated as a trust under the Charitable Trust Act 1957.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to provide cancer patients with funding to allow exercise support before, during and after medical treatment. ExMed is about providing individualised and supervised exercise support. We aim to promote positive lifestyle changes including diet, weight loss, stress management and smoking cessation. ExMed patients receive enhanced recovery that support medical treatment aims-to reduce post-treatment complications.

Ongoing operation of ExMed throughout New Zealand allowing for best-practice exercise medicine to be embedded into routine cancer care.
Who Can Participate
Who Is Eligible For Funding?
People can participate in ExMed at any time before, during or after treatment.
People diagnosed with cancer in the Manawatū region.
Referral through oncology at MidCentral DHB in Palmerston North.
Eligibility depends on fitness levels
(CPET test results).
