Program Breakdown

How to Get on The Program

You can enter the program as a private/self funding participant or an ExMed funded participant. The amount of funds the charity raise will determine the number of patients that can be funded per year. Self-funding allows program entry independent from funded spaces available.

Medical Clearance

Patients’ needs to obtain medical clearance─essentially obtain confirmation from a medical specialist that it is safe for them to start with the guided, supervised exercise. The steps listed below provide guidance on how to get on the program.

Step 1: Contact the ExMEd for Cancer Charity

Telephone: 021 66 3115 Email: admin@exmed.co.nz

The charity might need confirmation of your cancer diagnosis. For confirmation, you might need to provide the contact details of your general medical practitioner.

Step 1 is to put you in the system and ensure progression towards step 2.

Step 2: Referral to MidCentral Oncology

The charity will refer you to MidCentral Oncology for eligibility screening. This is a necessary step to ensure patient safety. The clinical exercise team will need clinical background information that can only be provided by the MidCentral Oncology specialists.

Step 3: Referral to a Registered Clinical Physiologist

Upon confirmation that the patient can safely engage in exercise, he/she will be referred to a registered clinical exercise physiologist.

Note: This funding and program is only available for patients living in the Palmerston North/Manawatū Region.
